Now, while this incident may or may not have been intentional, it surely was stupid. Both cyclists in the shoulder, on the right side of the white line, get mowed down by a car that veers out of the lane. There is no right hand turn possible when the car makes contact, and, thus, essentially no reason for that vehicle to be so far out of the lane.
Stuff like this just makes me sick to my stomach - for any locals, this is Highway 13 coming out of Berkeley - a common access point for Tunnel Road and Grizzly Peak...where I happened to be riding just last weekend.
Whatever you end up doing this weekend, stay safe and vigilant, and have a good time.
Update: Justice served - the perp has been arrested and is in custody. "Medaglia was arrested for possession of heroin, felon in possession of ammunition, violation of probation, and felony hit-and-run, according to BPD."
Thanks for posting this Danny. It is SO, So, SO important to remember that there are people who are buzzed on booze, high on drugs, hopped up on cellphones driving these multi ton murder weapons everywhere- ALL of the time. As a cyclist you can never assume a driver is in his or her right mind and can never expect they will act rationally. This story ends better than most...
ReplyDeleteand, we also can't lose fact of the 2 most important details here (at least according to all the usual online posters to the original news story):
ReplyDeleteYES- they were wearing helmets- HOORAY!!! (like helmet wearing somehow contributes to or prevents every bicycle accident known to man)
YES- they rolled a stop sign while rolling with traffic to the right- OMG!!! I can certainly see how that contributed to the day's events...(NOT). Shit, I roll through 3 or 4 in my car on the way to and from work everyday and I don't get sideswiped and left for dead on the side of the road.
Anon - I completely agree with you on all counts. It's remarkable that Bruno and his friend came away from this incident relatively unscathed.
ReplyDeleteWe here at Abandon Your Car do value the worth of a helmet (I think they've saved us all a time or two), and while rolling a stop sign may not be the right thing to do, it certainly did not contribute to the course of this accident.
Cheers! Ride safe!
