Fruita: located on the eastern periphery of the great void

there is so much good riding in Fruita... we have barely scratched the surface. Jen and i rode there last wednesday for about 3 hours, almost all of it on singletrack and passed by 4 other people the whole time we were out on the trail. next time we get out that way, i will be sure to get some images of the road riding as it is every bit as good as the off-road stuff.

hard to believe, but true




Mack Ridge is best ridden from west to east. nice singletrack with some challenging technical sections and a couple of short (for me- i'm old) dismounts. the views from the top are well worth the effort expended to climb up there.

this is also an invitation for our friend Dave (or any of our other family/friends for that matter) to come and ride with us. be sure to bring both your road bike and mountain bike.

bike master's most improved rider award - 2009

(drumroll, please...) and the award goes to:



Jennifer.
she has never participated in a bike race until this year, but she came out winning right from the start. it could be argued that her new, 650b wheeled Eriksen had a lot to do with her success (it did). but in all honesty, natural talent and determination conspiring with a high strenth-to-weight ratio and some good old-fashioned aggression mixed in as well are what really did it.



truth be told, she'd still be winning races on a wal-mart bike



just a few months ago, this technical section of Mack Ridge would likely have caused a frustrating get-off-and-walk situation followed immediately by a couple of miles worth of bitter complaints about going back to flat pedals.

now she just stays clipped in and punches it.




honorable mention goes to: Danny Rietz, AKA "the young apprentice".
he's going to have to work really hard to steal the title from his aunt, though. hopefully, he rides some this winter before coming back to Colorado for his second year at Bike Master's Death March Training Camp.

steamboat springs stage race 2009 - ski & bike care criterium

day four and the final event. mostly just a parade lap, as the G.C. battle has been decided. this is the event in which to stay out of trouble but at the same time get some exposure at the front of the race... and one last chance for the riders farther down the heap to reclaim a little bit of dignity.

i was actually feeling pretty good after all of the chasing the day before.

finished 8th today (that's a little bit more like it, eh?) moved up one spot to 19th in final G.C. it was really great to get back in the game again. a lot of fun, just like i remember.



steamboat spring stage race 2009 - moots road race

sunday's road race featured a hilly parcours with 900 meters of climbing over 88 kilometers. pro/1/2's did 112 kilometers with 1100 meters of climbing. most of the rain storms held off while the race was going on, but the wind did not.

20th today, 20th on G.C.
the upward trajectory suddenly turned down sharply when i missed my start like a cat. 4 rookie and spent the day chasing. at least i caught some guys and didn't finish dead last. talk about embarrassing.
afterwards, i called my old soigneur, Murphy III. sometimes a racer needs a babysitter to make sure that they stay on top of all the little details so the racing can be calm, relaxed and focused. things are sure going to be different next time around.




steamboat springs stage race 2009 - marabou circuit

racing continued saturday at the marabou preserve with a 7-lap, 50.75 kilometer circuit race. the parcours featured two minor climbs with one longer/steeper switchback section totalling 140 meters of elevation gain/loss per lap, followed immediately by a fast, switchback downhill. the remainder was rolling downhill through the finish with a fast, flat section leading back to the climbs.
the numbers don't seem like much for such a short race, but the whole thing was pretty much sorted out today.
like i said before; these almost-old-guys are fast.

i'm doing my best to stay out of the wind and still not get shagged off the back. the three guys at the front looking comfortable while driving the pace are the top three on G.C.


not the place to be: shagged off the back. here i try to imagine myself more powerful than Floyd when he won the epic Tour stage to Morzine in 2006. i forgot the beer-and-shots the night before, so my form was a bit off compared to what his was.
1 hour 35 minutes puts me 15th on the day, 15th overall G.C.

steamboat springs stage race 2009 - marabou TT

one thing that i have known for a long time is that i'm usually not the fastest in the "race of truth". 12:06 for the hilly 6.75 kilometer parcours. got caught at the line by the guy who won- at a minute twenty seven better than me. that time would have placed him 3rd in the pro/1/2's. pretty impressive. the old guys are fast in Colorado.
true.

now i'm sittin pretty in 18th overall, i should be able to improve on that in the next two days.
if not, get the broom wagon.

steamboat springs stage race 2009 - video preview

here's a link to the official race website where Corey has posted a video from the S.S. Winter Sports Club circuit race held earlier this year.
the video appears to be from one of the warm-up sessions before the actual racing started, showing riders desending* from near the top of the climb. during this weekend's circuit race on the same parcours, i predict that the faster categories will be winding out at better than 75 kilometers/hour on this same section.
for those of you who haven't seen top level road racing before, this 4-day stage race will present many great opportunities to do so.

the chicane through the gate looks kind of sketchy to me, hopefully the promoters put up a few strategically placed hay bales for safety's sake.



*note to aspiring young or novice riders: observe the rider in the blue kit in front of the camera... not holding a steady line on the wheel of the rider in front of her, is she? several unpredictable, side-to-side movements going on there.

the rider in front of her is ready for Moto GP with his knees hanging out in the wind like that, exaggerating just a little too much for the corners being negotiated and how fast (or slow, rather) they are actually going.

the moral of this story is: either trust the rider in front of you to be solid and predictable (so that you may ride in a similar manner) or be the rider in front.
